There are several stories about what was actually in David Gilmours Black Strat. For this set I have reviewed many articles and this is my version. David’s bridge pickup was a Dimarzio FS-1 and having owned several originals in the past I am very familiar with it. My bridge is wound to 13k for a big fat punchy tone that breaks up crisply with drive. The middle pickup by some accounts was an overwound ’60s grey bobbin so I have done the same with my middle. At 6.15k this pickup is bright with a tight bottom end with a distinct late ’60s vibe. The neck pickup is an underwound ’50s Formvar wound 5.45k for a nice clean vintage tone.

I have 3 strats with a set of these in each one! I have found these to be extremely versatile, from beautiful cleans to classic rock sounds and everything in between.
I use my strats for everything I play so I needed a balanced set of pickups that covers everything and these deliver.
If I am to get a new strat, I will be throwing a set of these in straight away.

Recently bought an 84 American Strat from a pawn broker, reasonable price. Got it home, tried it, something in the sound was missing. Had a friend work it over for me, turns out no Fender running gear , buyer beware I guess. Was told about Dave’s selection of hand built pickups, saw the blurb and decided on the Gilmour inspired set asked Dave if he could put them into a scratch plate deal for me.. no probs. Installed them WOW!!! Unbelievable tone and sound with heaps of variations. Would highly recommend anyone who’s doing a rebuild to check Dave’s range of hand made pickups out. I’m one happy camper.
