Description
A bit of a look at a set of 1982 Fender USA Fullerton Tele pickups vs the earlier 1970s-1980s USA pickups and red bobbin Fender Japan Squier JV, SQ + A serial pickups. They don’t exactly fall out of the sky and this is the first set I have had with a grey bobbin neck and braided leads. Braided leads appear in 1970s Fender Teles and I have had a few sets over the years and there are pics of a 1980 Stamped set I had a few years back.
The neck pickup on this ’82 Fullerton set is very similar to the ’80 set but just with a date stamped grey bobbin. The bridge pickup has the ’50s style flat poles for a ’52 reissue while the 1980 set is staggered the same as the mid 1960s – 1970s pickups. The last 2 pics are of Fender Japan JV/A serial red bobbins which often get confused for Fullertons but they are an entirely different pickup all together. Basically any fiber bobbin with those little notches cut in where the coil wire wraps around is Japanese so be careful of sellers passing them off as USA Fenders. The wire used on the USA Fullertons is dark plain enamel while the MIJ Fenders are red copper coloured poly wire.
